Damn my feeble USB 1!...?

So, I've got an Archos GS100 Mini (in black, if you're interested), but whenever I plug it into my PC (WMP), it says ' This device can perform faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 port' and all that gunk ociated with Windows. Now, it says 'faster', but my device isn't even recognised by the computer! Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks.
