What format are songs on itunes?

What format are songs on itunes? and is there any way i can convert them to wma or mp3? I want to buy a portable xm radio/mp3 player and i own ipod. I dont want to buy the xm radio if i cant transfer my music. do you know of any web sites or programs that will do this. thanx
